Tips After Water Damage

arrows What To Do First

  • Stop the incoming water, often by just closing a valve. If necessary, call a plumber.

  • Get restoration help immediately. Prompt action now will save time and money.

  • Consider finance. Does insurance cover the loss; and what is the deductible?

arrows Stay Safe

  • Be careful of a “slip and fall” accident on wet floors.

  • Don’t turn electrical appliances on and off while standing on any wet floor.

  • Don’t turn ceiling light on and off while the ceiling is wet.

  • Don’t use your household vacuum to try to remove the water.

  • Consider turning off breakers to affected rooms.

  • In case of structural damage such as sagging wet ceiling, stay out of those areas.

  • In case of sewage back flow don’t walk in affected areas. If you absolutely must handle contaminated materials, wear rubber gloves and protective clothing.

arrows Help Speed Drying

  • If possible, keep the indoor temperature at or below 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21degrees Celsius) until the technician arrives.

  • Turn on air conditioning and fans or open windows unless it is very humid out doors.

  • Mop up excess water as soon as possible.

  • Hang wet fabrics.

arrows Protect Contents

  • Remove valuables, breakables, and lightweight furniture from affected areas.

  • Remove wet books and magazines because their inks may easily run and stain.

  • Place foil or plastic between furniture legs and wet carpet to reduce staining.

  • Hang draperies so they do not contact flooring, which will prevent water circles.

  • Prop up or hang wet cushions, pillows, etc.

  • Open drawers and cabinet doors (do not force).

  • Wipe water from wood furniture.
